Overview

Nestled in the vibrant suburb of Mount Albert, Auckland, 顺记湘菜 Shun Kee Restaurant is a genuine haven for those craving authentic Hunan cuisine. This Chinese eatery, located conveniently at 895 New North Road near the train station, offers a distinct culinary journey deeply rooted in the robust and spicy flavors characteristic of Hunan province. The setting strikes a balance between casual dining and takeaway, making it an ideal spot for both quick meals and relaxed gatherings.

The menu is a celebration of traditional Hunan dishes, with a strong focus on pork, a staple ingredient in many of their specialties. Signature offerings such as the Boiled Fish with Pickled Cabbage and Chili and the Spicy and Sour Beef with Bamboo Shoots showcase the bold, fiery profile that defines this regional cuisine. Additionally, the smoked pork stir-fries, from leek to celery and dried radish, reveal the kitchen’s mastery in layering smoky, savory notes with a punch of spice. For those who prefer a lighter touch without sacrificing depth, dishes like the Jelly Fish Salad and Cucumber Braised Spicy Tofu provide excellent balance.

The dining experience at Shun Kee is enriched by the chef's attentiveness to individual spice tolerances, creating a welcoming environment even for those less accustomed to intense heat. Long-time patrons and newcomers alike acknowledge the authenticity conveyed in each bite, often describing a nostalgic connection to home-style flavors. The owner, hands-on and passionate despite the occasional busy moments, ensures that guests feel valued, reflecting a community-centric atmosphere.

Shun Kee’s appeal extends beyond just spice lovers; it draws a diverse crowd who seek honest, traditional Chinese fare that doesn't compromise on quality. The inclusion of classic steamed dishes such as Braised Pork Belly and Steamed Egg adds a comforting dimension and rounds out the meal with delicate textures against the bold stir-fries. Accompanied by simple steamed rice, these dishes provide the necessary canvas for the complex seasoning typical of Hunan cooking.

While the restaurant’s modest interior may not cater to those expecting fine dining aesthetics, it perfectly suits its audience—food enthusiasts who value authenticity over frills. The portion sizes tend to be moderate, aligning with the emphasis on flavor density rather than volume, inviting diners to sample multiple dishes. Parking accessibility and proximity to public transport add to the convenience, making it a practical choice for locals and visitors alike.

In summary, 顺记湘菜 Shun Kee Restaurant stands out as Auckland’s premier destination for genuine Hunan cuisine. It promises an engaging taste experience steeped in tradition and spice, delivered with warmth and sincerity by a dedicated kitchen team. Whether you’re a dedicated fan of fiery dishes or exploring the depths of Chinese regional flavors for the first time, Shun Kee offers a memorable and satisfying culinary encounter.

This restaurant serves tasty food that both my husband and I enjoyed. Hunan food is very spicy but they happily toned it back for my husband, who can't handle too much chilli. The menu is very porky but I don't like pork so we tried various other options instead. The smelly tofu entree was suitably pungent and came topped with hot chilli. It was too hot for my husband but just right for me so I hoovered it all up. We also had hot and sour pickled radish, dong 'an chicken and stir fried chicken. All were lovely. The owner was friendly and interested to know what we thought of the food given we were the only non Asian patrons. The only negative - and it's not a big deal - is that the owner was busy in the kitchen when we arrived and it took quite a while before she noticed us standing at the counter. But we didn't mind too much and would happily eat there again.

Great Chinese food, good taste, but the portion size is a bit small, and the boss seemed to see through this and complained to us about the soaring prices.

I recommend this place to lovers of spicy food, Hunan cooking style of Chinese cuisine. There are many types of spicy food, Thai, Mexican, curry, Sichun hotpot, etc. But Hunan is a different one, try it out youself. The best praise is not delicious, but truly local(Hunan), or authentic. I heard their regulars will travel far for it. I loved my choices. As it comes with rice, those who don't normally take rice may find the dishes slightly more heavy in seasoning. For decos, it is between a takeaway and a restaurant, I would take friends there if fine dining is what you have on your mind. But the food does not disappoint at all. Situated at the junction of New North Road and Mt Albert, close to the train station, best to park behind the shop, there is Park and Ride carpark there.

Nice Chinese food and big portions. Reasonably fast response time as well. Food was served within 10-15 mins. Smoked pork with bamboo shoots was great; And also ordered a stir fried chicken item - Dong'an Chicken. Fairly good. One can also try their smelly tofu.
